Execution dates set for three death row inmates

RALEIGH - Correction Secretary Theodis Beck has set execution dates for three death row inmates. The execution of Ernest Paul McCarver is set for Nov. 9. The execution of John Hardy Rose is set for Nov. 30 and the execution of Sherman Elwood Skipper is set for Dec. 7. All three executions are scheduled for 2 a.m. at Central Prison in Raleigh.

McCarver, 41, was sentenced to death Sept. 23, 1992 in Cabarrus County for the murder of Woodrow Hartley.

Rose, 43, was sentenced to death in Haywood County on May 12, 1992 for the murder of Patricia Stewart.

Skipper, 59, received two death sentences in Bladen County on Feb. 19, 1992 for the murders of Aileen Pittman and Nelson Fipps.

Media tours are scheduled at Central Prison on the Monday prior to each execution. The media tour for the McCarver execution is set for Nov. 5, Rose on Nov. 26 and Skipper on Dec. 3. Interested media representatives should be at Central Prison’s visitor center promptly at 10 a.m. on the tour date. Warden R.C. Lee will explain the execution procedures. The session will last approximately one hour. These will be the only opportunities to photograph the execution chamber and death watch area before the executions.

Journalists who plan to attend any of the tours should call the Department of Correction Public Information Office at 919-716-3700.
