Drug /Alcohol Treatment Center for Inmates Closing in Durham

DURHAM – A private chemical dependency treatment center operated by Cornell Companies Inc. is closing Saturday, June 30 as a result of budget cuts within the Department of Correction. The contract with Cornell Companies was set to expire June 30 and the department chose not to renew it.

Approximately 75 inmates assigned to the Durham Treatment Center have been transferred to other prison facilities or treatment centers. The inmates, who have no more than 24 months remaining on their sentences, were first assigned to the treatment center after being identified as having a substance abuse problem.

All work release inmates who were assigned to Cornell’s treatment center have been transferred to Durham Correctional Center and will be able to continue working in the Durham area. Inmates without work release jobs were transferred to Pasquotank Correctional Institution in Elizabeth City and Tyrrell Prison Work Farm in Columbia, where they will continue in drug and alcohol recovery programs.

Cornell Companies Inc. has been providing drug and alcohol treatment services for inmates in Durham since December 1996.
